Looking Up – Hands, Feet, and Faces of Love

Ethan Smith   -

Dear Hope Family and Friends,

Deep in our church’s value statements is a line that beautifully captures what our leadership longs for. It says, “Christ has redeemed his people to be co-laborers in His Kingdom – his hands and feet and faces of love commissioned to go into all of life, every vocation, every community, every relationship to be witnesses to and expressions of his grace.” While we regularly pray that for you, last week I had the privilege of being sent to see firsthand some of the hands, feet, and faces of love that we partner with around the world.

First, I spent two days in Denver with British ministers who have been making disciples in hard-to-reach cities like Manchester and Glasgow. I heard ministry reports from the frontlines, engaged in small group discussions to understand their dreams and needs, and enjoyed warm conversations over meals. Despite a small percentage of the UK population confessing Christ, God is clearly at work through his people. There is a rising tide of interest in religious belief, specifically in the hope and healing that comes from the gospel of Jesus Christ, and laborers are being equipped for the harvest (see Matthew 9:35-38).

On Wednesday I flew up to Vancouver to visit A & H (full names withheld for security), whom we support as their official sending church*. A & H are primarily committed to preaching the gospel to the Persian world (H was born in Iran) through digital and social media discipleship. However, they are also ministering to their neighbors and building relationships with a number of folks outside the church. I was incredibly encouraged by their big vision to see Persians turn to Christ, but also by their growing compassion for the city of Vancouver. Like the UK, Vancouver has a low percentage of Christians, and yet through the hands, feet, and faces of love like A & H, the Spirit is moving in mighty ways.

I’d love for you to know the excitement of experiencing God’s grace for the nations. If you’re interested in a vision or mission trip through Hope, please let me know and I’ll help you get started. Or if you just want to hear stories and learn more about how to pray for the world, let’s grab a cup of coffee and chat.

Peace,
Ethan
