God’s Work in My Life:
While I would sincerely call myself a Christian since fairly early childhood, my practice of that faith was typically in fits and starts for a long time. Until, that is, when I was 26, in the second year of my marriage, and my wife Elise pregnant with our first child. It was then that I experienced a gentle, but firm and unmistakable tap on my shoulder that said, “It’s time.” As a result, I finally surrendered all to Jesus’ call and claim on my life. That surrender brought with it peace, “a peace that passes all understanding.” How so? My life from that moment was, and is still, full of the same victories and defeats, joys and disappointments, that preceded it. But my core reaction to the ever-varying circumstances changed forever. I truly became a “new creation.” Praise be to God!
How do you rest or play?
That’s difficult for me to answer. I used to participate in sports, jogging, softball, and basketball. I was also a sports fan, following the Atlanta Braves, for example, since 1970. But my legs don’t allow playing sports very much anymore, and for whatever reason, while still a fan, I find I just can’t sustain the interest I once had. I could say I like “piddling” in our vegetable garden or with the many animals on our little farm. But, to be frank, many of those chores can for me become very quickly exactly that, chores. So, I’ll say it’s the pleasure of being a part of the life of our nine grandchildren, all still young. I’ve always loved kids and the Lord has blessed me to become a grandfather, or “Pop-pop” as I’m called.
