Dear Hope Family,
Assuming that you have not floated away in the midst of all the monsoon rains, I write to invite you to the 2020 Forum on Faith and Culture, held for the 5th year in our fair city of Winston-Salem, on Friday evening, February 14th, and Saturday morning, February 15th, at First Presbyterian Church.
The Forum is an annual gathering of folks in our area sponsored by leaders and congregants from a diversity of local churches. The “Why?” of the Forum is: We long to help Christians reimagine culture and the common good in order to see Winston-Salem thrive. The “What?” of the Forum is: We want to extend a conversation about the importance, beauty, and challenge of faithful living as the Church in our day.
Last year we engaged the challenging, extremely pressing, and formative issues of race, faith, and justice. This year we are excited to pull back from the hands-on work of transformation to consider the building blocks of character and virtue that enable such transformation for a Christian living in this culture by faith.
The official write-up for the 2020 Forum offers a helpful description and introduction:
The theme of 2020’s Forum is Put Out Your Nets Into Deeper Water: An Invitation to Prayer. The weekend will push us to deepen our definition of prayer beyond a “duty” and toward an expression of our fullest experience of being human. Building on this definition, we will discuss and workshop how we deepen our prayer lives and seek to broaden our spirituality both privately and publicly. Author and speaker Bruce Hindmarsh will be the featured guest at the fifth annual Forum, where we will reflect on the intersection of faith and culture as it relates to the inner life and spirituality. Bruce is the James M. Houston Professor of Spiritual Theology and Professor of the History of Christianity at Regent College in Vancouver, B.C. Please join us for a weekend of thoughtful reflection and conversation.
I commend this time with Bruce Hindmarsh as an excellent way to grow in the grace of the Gospel. Please do make plans to come for all or any of the gatherings. For more information and a fuller breakdown of the various sessions as well as childcare information, visit https://www.
I look forward to casting our nets into deeper water together so that we can be more alive to what God is doing in and through us in this wonderful city.
Grace and peace,
