Dear Hope Family,
I mentioned last Sunday towards the end of a long sermon (like me, you might have been dozing off as that preacher droned on and on – ha!) how God has been at work to further breakdown the barriers to racial unity in our churches and communities right here in Winston Salem through the ministry of the Gospel, and now I am excited to share with you all more details about the upcoming 2019 Forum on Faith and Culture for our city.
There will be two key gatherings for the dynamic weekend of the Forum:
- February 8th – 8pm. Friday evening offers a presentation of the new musical, “Union”, at the Stevens Center downtown. The play is about the sanitation workers strike in Memphis in 1968. Think “Hamilton” for the Civil Rights Movement! It promises to be a fantastic show that can set the table for discussions of race, reconciliation, and racial justice and how God’s Church features into all of those crucial, challenging realities. Tickets are free, and Hope will receive a limited distribution (perhaps only 25-50); however, the event will be broadcast at First Presbyterian just a block away from the Stevens Center if we run out of tickets.
- February 9th – 8:30 am – 12:30 pm. Saturday will pick up the themes and content from “Union” and provide a context for discussion and processing through the lens of the Gospel and Jesus’ finished work on the Cross. Union Baptist Church will host the Forum for Saturday. There will be panel discussions with the creators and producers of the musical, times of worship and prayer, and thoughtful conversation towards change and healing. Lunch will be provided for those who register in advance.
Many more details and resources can be found at the Forum website:www.faithandculturewsnc.org.
I humbly ask you to join me in fervent prayer for our city, this movement of God’s Spirit, and the role we as individuals and a church can play in God’s Kingdom coming visibly and graciously into our midst. I eagerly invite you to be a part of the weekend.
Please do not hesitate to connect with me for further conversation or questions along these lines!
Grace and peace,
