Dearest Hope Family,
Two pressing matters for this Friday’s Pastor’s Corner:
A Prayer for Friday’s Restlessness
Not many of us are accustomed to prolonged limitations, inconveniences, and adversity. We prefer, welcome, and are more used to resolution, quick turnarounds, and solid bounce backs. As a result, being unsettled – whether that is anger, exasperation, or fear – is familiar and the background noise of many of our hearts and minds. Low-level yet never quite fully dissipating restlessness is often our companion.
I recently started returning to some of the prayers and quotations that helped me early on in the pandemic – especially when that restlessness was novel enough to be easily recognizable. One of the prayers that helped me afresh was from Kate Bowler, and I commend it to you once again. I pray that it would give you a renewed sense that there is more for you to experience than the background noise of being unsettled:
A Prayer of Possibility
“In dealing with genuinely terrifying moments, I don’t want to be an optimist. And I don’t want to be a pessimist.
It’s not true that ‘Everything is possible.’
It’s not true that ‘Nothing is possible.’
I say a little prayer:
‘God, show me what is possible today.'”
A Look Ahead for Our Gathered Worship
We have cobbled together a fine rhythm for gathering in worship over the past four months. The addition of the Vespers Service allowed us to offer options for folks who are more comfortable worshipping outdoors, and the livestream and indoor service in the morning have allowed us to provide complementary options for others.
Moving forward, I want to be explicit about our plans for the Vespers Service through November 1st and to invite you to pray with and for the Session as we engage some hard decisions about next steps for gathered worship as the daylight fades and the weather will be harder to navigate with outdoor services.
- October 11 – 5:45-6:30 with Family Worship from 4:40 to 5:00 pm
- October 18 – 5:45-6:30
- October 25 – 5:45-5:30 with Family Worship from 4:40 to 5:00 pm
- November 1st – Because of the time change, we will move the service back to 4:00 – 5:00 pm to test this time slot and hopefully accommodate those who have benefitted from the outdoor worship option.
Prayers for the Planning:
Please join the elders in praying for wisdom, faithfulness, creativity, and clarity about how to proceed with planning for gathered worship at Hope. God has shown himself absolutely faithful for our worship over these exacting past seven months. He has blessed us with excellent, safe opportunities to gather as his people, hear his word, and feast at his table. We are confident that God will continue to make a way for us to be his church and minister his Gospel. We are hoping to discern his clear leading and to have the courage and trust to follow where he leads. Please lift up those very concerns alongside of us!
Grace and peace,
