Faith Going to the Dogs

Series: Good News From Mark

Scripture: Mark 7:24-30

Come ye sinners, poor and wretched
Weak and wounded, sick and sore;
Jesus, ready, stands to save you,
Full of pity, joined with power.
He is able, He is able;
He is willing; doubt no more.

Let not conscience make you linger,
Nor of fitness fondly dream;
All the fitness he requires
Is to feel your need of Him.
This He gives you, this He gives you,
‘Tis the Spirit’s rising beam.

—Joseph Hart

“I love what this woman is doing.  In Western cultures we don’t have anything like this kind of assertiveness.  We only have assertion of rights. We do not know how to contend unless we’re standing up for our rights, standing on our dignity and our goodness saying, “This is what I am owed.”  But this woman is not doing that at all.  This is rightless assertiveness, something we know little about.  She’s not saying, “Lord, give me what I deserve on the basis of my goodness.” She’s saying, “Give me what I don’t deserve on the basis of your goodness – and I need it now.”

—Tim Keller,  Jesus the King, 96
